Austin Allen is too good not to be protected on the 40-man roster this year. Whether he advances to the Padres or is a trade chip, you have to admire his commitment to get better. He wasn’t on Baseball America ‘s last Top 100 prospects but he couldn’t be that far away. Speaking of the Top 100, Padres had 9 on the list – the most of any major league team – and that did not include Patino, Espinoza and Weathers who all could have been in that list.
This is one of those guys who just deserves a big high five. With Mejia, it is possible he will be traded, but whomever gets him, I think it’s pretty clear the guy can rake. We should also remember, that catching is something that is fragile, so I wouldn’t be too quick to offload him. As for these lists, they’re pretty much clickbait in my opinion. My only thought, is in the case of Anderson Espinoza, for a guy who hasn’t thrown a pitch in almost two years, the fact that he is on a list, tells us something about the viability of these lists. The only list that matters, is the one we don’t see in the offices of AJ.
